Merry Christmas!

I am using this excerpt from one of my favorite bloggers in a recent post:
Almost 2,000 years ago Christ took on human flesh and was born into this world. The Incarnation is truly one of the greatest miracles of God. Divinity took on humanity, He became like us. But He did not do this for a parlor trick, or because He was bored. Christ became man so that He could die for us. God took on flesh so that He could be executed in our place, to pay the price for our sins. Then He rose three days later, proving His power of death and giving a promise of eternal life to those who would repent and trust in Him.
Let us dwell on the miracle of the Incarnation. Let us be in awe of His death and resurrection. And let us share with everyone, "It's about the cross."
I thought it so fitting because I wanted to share this song which has quickly become one of my favorites...."It's About the Cross"
May you and your family have a blessed holiday, remembering and celebrating the great incarnation of our Lord, and looking forward with eager anticipation to His return!

Project Complete!

Finished frames!

Original Frame
I FINALLY got some craft time today to finish up this frame project that has been whirling around my brain for weeks!  I took it up another notch after watching a video by margie who also was responsible for my bird ornaments!  This is not the best photo, but they look GREAT on my tree :0).  I tried to take a photo of that, but I am on a time crunch, so that's that.  I also thought I'd show you the original frame before I got my hands on it!!

At any rate, the MORE interesting note is that I spent the WHOLE DAY in my craft room (woot-woot).  I had to seize the day because I don't know when I'll get another one..it is the time of year to be busy for sure!

While in there, I managed to make 2 new angels and tweaked the first one to bring it up to par with the two new ones ;0).

I am sending one to Katherine, Jonia and Natalie.  I have something in mind for Jan, Shellie and Nancy too.  You guys have to wait for my next creative spurt, but I promise I'll make it worth while ;0).

Thanks for taking time to stop by my blog and I especially thank those of you who take the time to encourage and pray for me.  I am blessed by your kindnesses immensly!

In the grace and peace of Christ alone, Marsha :0)

Emmanuel

I am super excited to share the first of 10 ornaments that I am making for a Christ-honoring tree this year!  I bought the cheapest frames I could find to alter for this project and I am so happy with how the first one came out!  Can't wait to finish them up so that we can reflect on the magnificent incarnation of Christ this  year and as many more as the Lord allows!  I have gone through a couple of years of struggling with how to celebrate this season in the RIGHT spirit and have made some mis-steps along the way in trying to avoid the sensationalism that this holiday can bring.  I really feel at peace this year and full of joy to celebrate what truly is a joyous occasion!

I was also tremendously blessed by your responses to my last post...and have sent the canvas to my friend Christy who was the reason I got started on this whole crafty journey to begin with!.

I  would love to give away another canvas...if there is an interest.  This is my sweet little Christmas angel who is singing about the GOOD NEWS that God has come to earth in the flesh for the redemption of men!  I am so longing to join in that heavenly choir to sing His praises....are you?
At any rate, if you would like to receive her as a gift, please let me know in the comments :0)

Timely Reminder

I wanted to share this small canvas with you today that I made as a part of one of the classes I have taken.  The image and color scheme are a copy, but the verse is personal to me.  I need to be re-grounded in scripture OFTEN.  I am so very blessed, and still I am more often focused on what I need to do, what I have failed to do, and what I am missing.  What a shame!  This season most of all, I am humbled and awed and what God HAS done, what He WILL do, and how SUFFICIENT He is!
I would love to give this canvas to anyone of you who is honest enough to say you need this reminder too!  Just leave a comment if you are interested and I would love to send you this as a Christmas gift :0).

Very Thankful

We had a really lovely Thanksgiving in our home.  It is the second year that I have cooked for the 3 of us, and the food turned out great, and the fellowship of our close family was sweet.  My cup seriously overflows at the goodness of God and the joy of this season in my life.  My wonderful husband even pitched in yesterday and helped me make my long awaited bird ornaments for the tree.  I took a class last year and fell in love with these, but couldn't find the white birds to make them.  So, I collected the other supplies and when I saw these show up in my local craft store early November I snatched up a box and finally got to make them yesterday!  I am SUCH a dork that I made 13 and every single time I put one together completely I said "this is SO cute!"  My husband just laughed at me, but seriously aren't they darling?  I

This is a sketch I made last night for my current class from Christy Tomlinson....it looks nothing like her whimsical owl, but it is how my brain took it.....and here is how she came together on a canvas board.  She is all dressed up and ready to go to the holiday gift exchange...bringing more than just her considerably sassy attitude!  Honestly, I was just so happy to have a  chance to get into my craft room for a bit (albeit with many interruptions), that I just made something!  I have no idea what the caption should be....but will add one when I decide how to incorporate some whimsical fun without denigrating what I consider to be a Holy Holiday.  I am VERY blessed to have my husband home and have been enjoying him immensely.  I am also blessed to have such a well stocked craft room that he loves for me to enjoy....so that is what I did today.  There a great many things going on in the world to weigh down my heart and mind, but for today I have whimsical joy in this silly crafty creation and  in the blessing of my family together under one roof and loving God with all our might :0)

New Art Journal

Hello blogging friends!   I have had an interesting week with ups, downs and challenges like everyone else, but managed to make some lovely art journal pages in the midst of it all.  I will never be a fine artist, and quite frankly don't want to work that hard even if I had that kind of talent!  Instead I am TRULY enjoying being a FUN artist :0).  I am thankful for the many talented ladies out there who are generous to share their work to help me continue to expand my abilities too.  Hope you enjoy looking at what I really enjoyed making....

Never Give up came for this page because it was reworked MANY times, but I LOVE the end result!
This is one of my favorite scriptures.....

Just had this song in my head while making this page!

Autumn??

So here's my pumpkin stack...its actually not that crooked, I just take bad photos!  Anyhoo, I have enjoyed this neutral palette this year...i had autumn colors in my home for years, so I am enjoying the clean and simple look.  I can revamp these next year when it is not like 90 degrees outside!!
I also used this color scheme for some easy peasy candles with stuff I already had on hand (except the beans that I picked up at the grocery store).  I wanted acorns, but couldn't find any and now I am glad because I read they could sprout worms...ewww.  The beans were dirt cheap and could always be spray painted for another occasion...

Thanks for stopping by and hope you are enjoying some cool fall weather for me ;0)!

My Current Crafty space

This is what my craft room looks like....for now.  Plan to overhaul it for more optimal usefulness once the hubster comes home--maybe.  I am pretty comfortable in here, but have no workspace because every surface is too cluttered!  I think that is an ongoing problem even though this is the largest space to date.  Maybe at some point I have to stop adding stuff...nah who am I kidding??!!!  I just need to KEEP organizing lol.  Here are some girlies I made last night too:

Thanks for stopping by and I PROMISE I will visit you ladies that I have neglected lately....sorry.  I have finally started taking care of some medical issues that were not only wearing on me physically, but emotionally too. It is what it is so  THANKS to my faithful few followers/friends :0)

Pumpkin Stack

Fall has always been my favorite season....the crisp air, the vibrant colors, spicy flavors all invoke a nostalgic feeling and a promise of the holidays just ahead.  WELL....since none of that is really present here in sunny Hawaii, I decided to do my fall pumpkin project in very neutral colors.  All my pumpkin decorations are black, white and green so this fits right in.  I actually like this color scheme...for this year anyway and I can always change it up next time with some paint, paper or decoupage!  It is the first year I actually put out fall decorations here, so that is a feat in and of itself ;0).

Quirky Bee Girl

This is a project I made for yet another class while I wait for my love to come home.  This is my version of a bumble bee girl, but instead of a Halloween costume, I had in mind the little bumble bee girl from an old video/song called no rain.  When I saw Christy Tomlinson's bee girl I immediately thought of that old song.  Maybe it appealed to me because I have always felt a bit out of place.  I WAS the chubby girl in a dance costume with all my skinny friends as a girl and as a woman still find myself constantly kind of on the outskirts of what so many seem to naturally excel at.  The older I get the more I think that my son may have gotten his Asperger's from ME!  At any rate, the one place I fit perfectly well is in my home with my immediate family.  I am very content with that....and REALLY look forward to my husband's return which I am hoping and praying will be on time and soon!  My world is just better when he is a part of it.

Bleeding Hearts

This month I finally followed along with Christy's video for her monthly mixed media kit and I have to say I think it is stinkin' cute!  It was just the creative kick in the pants that I needed this week.  These are a cute version of the bleeding heart flower like these
These are much more beautiful in their naturally created state, but I did enjoy a crafty take on them!

The Great Exchange

This is a current journal age I wanted to share.  As with all things I make, it represents an accumulation of several ideas from classes I have taken, other mixed media art I have seen on Pinterest, and my current reflection on scripture.  I started sketching this woman/girl with the thought that inside every woman resides the heart of a girl...for better or worse. I read a really sad blog post this morning about an incest survivor...but what was more sad were the responses that were well meaning but so man centered that there is no real hope in that kind of empathy.  I know very well what it is like to have a battered and bruised heart...and I also know the great sin that emitted from it.  No matter if you heart was well tended or cruelly taken advantage of,  it is still in need of fixing.  By our very nature, we ALL need a heart transplant and cannot rely on the nature we were born with...but  the good news is that we don't have to!   There has been a great exchange made on our behalf...when we respond to the gospel and put our trust in Christ alone.  That makes my heart leap for joy each and every time I consider it...this truth transcends all the sorrows and trials that come each and every day from living in a world so marred by sin.  It enables me to forgive as I have been forgiven and marvel at the amazing love of God the father who has put His righteous anger on Christ on my behalf.  RC Sproul has a short and beautiful narration of this if you'd like to take a listen...here

BEST spaghetti ever!!

I listen to wretched radio regularly as I am crafting.  I usually am informed about Christian worldview issues, encouraged in my efforts to witness boldly for Christ etc.  This week however, Todd Friel (the host) offered to share a recipe for amazing spaghetti.  Lately mine has not been turning out well, so I was intrigued.  I emailed and he responded.  One trip to the grocery store later, and I had the very BEST spaghetti I ever ate.  Not so good for my hips, but oh so very delicious on my lips!!  If you are a pasta lover like me you would want to give this a try!  Here is the link for the recipe....hope you enjoy!

Fun with PicMonkey App...

This app is so fun and easy to use!  I recently killed my laptop and am trying to re-build a picture gallery in the new one and spent some time playing with these photos from my Droid.
Love and miss this guy so much...he is such a gift from God and my best friend.  I am very thankful for him and that we can still communicate while he is deployed. It has been such a blessing to see how the Lord is growing us both individually and strengthening our relationship in this separation.   We both by God's grace work at it and make every effort to build one another up and pray diligently.  As great as that is...I am very much looking forward to being reunited! Oh, and I have been crafting and making some cool art journal pages...so I promise to share more of that soon too!  Be sure to check out the pic of my needy little poodle friend on the sidebar too ;0).

Amazing God

As soon as I put some texture and gesso on this page, I knew what I wanted it to be (rare for me)!  It came out pretty close to what I had envisioned except the wonky words...but hopefully their meaning will outweigh their placement!  The mountain ranges and blue water here on the island never cease to cause me to wonder at the marvelous creator and long for the day when I can see him and all things redeemed for His glory.  I am very thankful for not only the free gift of Grace that Christ has given to me....but for the sufficient word that encourages, refreshes and guides me all of my days.  It is a beautiful thing to know God more and more through the scriptures and have them shape and refine my perception of the world and people around me.   He is amazing and so very worthy of all of the life that I have and the devotion that I can give.

Some of my DIY projects....

Aloha blog friends!  These are not necessarily my most recent endeavors, but I took some time to upload several photos this morning so that I can begin posting again.  The first photo is the up-cycled filing cabinet project that Chip helped me with prior to our move....I was an ugly (and moldy) mess when we picked it up....but with some bleach, paint, wallpaper and molding it is now a beauty!  I used the same treatment on the adjacent drawers to my craft table and LOVE how it turned out.  The two tier stand is just two dishes from Target, a wood candle stick from the craft store, paint and glue.  Easy peasy and cute!  The twine flowers in the bottom dish are also a diy project that were really fun to make--even though I have no idea what I will use them on....YET ha!  Finally super simple magnet board made from a peice of galvanized metal, scrapbook paper and a frame to hold my movers and shapers dies.  Hope you enjoyed seeing these projects and that you will not just "pin" your ideas but put some into practice!
I have been busy with getting my house to look more like a home, volunteering more time at my church and dealing with all the day to day "stuff" that we all have, but will be more faithful to not only blog but visit and comment as well.  THANK YOU to those of you who keep up with me and check in on me from time to time---it has blessed me more than you know!

Inner beauty....

This little canvas was done over several times and  has seen a lot of manipulation...like it was only 50 cents on clearance, but I was determined to salvage it.  I spent a lot more money on the wasted paint and embellishments, but that is the way my mind works sometimes.  I refuse to give up or settle for something that just doesn't look right to me.  As I literally ripped off the front of round 3 of this little piece of art I began to change direction completely in where this project was going.  The base for this finished piece started with a scrap of computer paper that had sprays and ink on it from another project I am working on.  Taking off the old undesirable work was necessary to make way for the new start using that piece of paper that was more representative of my current work which I am more pleased with.  Once I had that base down, the layering and painting started taking a new direction.  I really had no intention of putting a girl on this canvas until the background was completed and was so busy and colorful...then the words were already typed and cut out in a loose stash that just happened to be on my desk.  It pretty much just came together over the course of a couple of days while I was struggling to make anything presentable even as I struggle to feel that way about myself.  Well,  the bottom line is this I am happy with the final outcome and I am reminded of all that God has done and is continuing to do in me.  I do not feel very beautiful these days in any capacity....but that is when I must walk by faith and not by sight.  The beauty within me is not of my own making....it is the finished work of the cross--my faith in Christ alone. Praise God that I am dead to my old life and that He is faithful to continue to work on me for my good and His glory.
I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the lifewhich I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

Updates...

Aloha blogging friends!  Just thought I'd share a little snapshot of one of the many lovely trees here in Hawaii that I get to see on my daily walks....now that my son is on his vacation it is just me and my rotten little poodle who is high demand!  The great weather and beautiful foliage are good reward for me during her many outings.  Anyhoo....I have not heard from Lisa to claim her prize, so I took the liberty to pass it on to a loyal follower whose address I just happen to already have ;0).  Drumroll please..................NATALIE your package is in the mail!  I hope that you enjoy it!  I am also taking advantage of this quiet time to REALLY organize my craft space and all the closets that just got crammed when we moved in. Mahalo Nui Loa for taking the time to stop by and  I hope to be back with fun stuff to share soon!

Finished Journal Cover/Project...

Here is the finished cover for my journal project.  I have to say that this is far and away my favorite work.  It was a labor of love and I know that he will be blessed by the hours of thought, prayer and effort that went into this.  This deployment was unforeseen and unwelcome.  We both have to daily choose to view this separation in the right light.  I have seen the Lord at work in both of us individually sharpening and maturing us in faith.  He has also given us great joy in finding different ways to deepen our intimacy...choosing to encourage one another in love and unity despite the distance.  I left the back cover blank so that he could write in it in response to the pages I have made or whatever is on his heart and mind.  This will be a treasure for us both and I can't help but be so joyful that in this time of would be trial that the Lord is gracious to give us means to grow more in love with Him and each other.  I am including some sneaky peaks of the rest of the inside pages too (couldn't resist)!

Beauty for Ashes...

So....this page sarted out VERY colorful too much so in fact so I put modeling paste and stencils in white all around the page to tone it down.  It still was just way too busy so I painted over the whole thing with white gesso.  This is where I ended up and I love it!  Had this been my initial direction, I may have gotten it a little tighter, but that is the beauty of this.  the layers, mistakes and corrections all lend to the finished product.  That is very much how I view my life in Christ.  I ended up adding a "secret" message to my love and sealed it with wax--fun!  As  result I turned this whole journal into something for him.  I won't show most of the pages as they are personal and I know that he will enjoy them.  I had to "man up" the cover since I am sending it to him too!

I need to add a little more detail, but not too much.  Instead of the butterflies and flowers, this is a nod to the catepillar...

At any rate, as I was developing this idea, Isaiah 61 came to mind and I think it is very fitting .  For those who would want to ponder this a bit more, Charles Spurgeon speaks beautifully to this passage here.

Blog Candy Update...

I have not forgotten about the blog candy and wanted to do an update with more photos! There will be at least on small canvas included too (didn't think you needed a photo of that).  I will draw a winner on Monday the 11th.  So any comments made on the original post or any posts between now and then will be eligible.  Hopefully that will give me time to figure out how to do the random generator...or I will just type out all the names and take a photo of the drawing.  I think that may be more fun.  Any comments are appreciated and I will still double the chances for blog suggestions.  Oh, and I will probably add more to the stash between now and then...I like there to be SOME surprise on arrival ;0).  Thanks for checking me out and I am looking forward to sharing some of my stash!

Canvas and Candy!

This canvas started out as a journal page...but my flowers got really fat so I decided to put them on a canvas instead.  I used fabric, button, seam binding and pearl accents to make these. I finished the canvas with these dimensional butterflies and this fun banner from studio calico that I added stamped letters to.  This idea of growing in grace has just gripped me...just like these colors that keep showing up.  Oh well, I am just going with it until I find a new groove I suppose :0).  This is now hanging on my wall over my craft table to remind me that the Lord is doing just that...growing me in the grace and knowledge of Christ so that I might bear more fruit.  I can see the blossoms as the beginning of this work and even though I have a long way to go, I am thankful for how far he has brought me already!
NOW to the more fun stuf.....I finally have a bag-o-goodies to give away!

This includes everything (except decoupage or staz-on) that you need to do a mixed media piece of your own!  Since my blog started as more of a stamping venue, I know many of you are new to mixed media and wanted to give you a taste of how fun it can be!
I have included a small canvas,  new stamp and paint set, some texture stamps and pieces, old book paper, decorative tissue paper, some embellishments and some of my favorite texture elements.  I am thinking that I have a paper hoarding problem and will go through and give up several pieces of cute patterned paper to put in the bag as well.
I really enjoy this, so I wanted to share that with someone else who may not try it on their own.  If that's you, then leave a comment and I'll be happy to select a winner in a few days and send this out right away so you can get messy and make some art with me!
There are no strings attached...but I will enter your name twice if you would share with me what you like most OR least about my blog so that I know how and where I can improve it.  Thanks for stopping by!

Ongoing change...

This is an art journal page that I did and finally used up these gorgeous butterfly stickers that I have been hoarding!!  I got them on clearance and was saving them for just the right project...and this is it!  I have been very guilty of thinking that somehow if I just get through "this" situation or overcome "this"hurdle that life will be better, easier, etc.  The truth is that there will always be areas of my own heart that need addressing and the pressures of life just keep coming in different ways as I age.  It is my prayer that I would embrace these changes as good even when they hurt and even when I thought I had already learned "that" lesson there is more room for growth! There is no shortcut to maturity...and I am grateful to God that He does not allow me to be too comfortable for too long and continually is at work in me in transforming me more and more into His likeness!

Covered by Grace

Good morning crafty friends!  This is a canvas that I made yesterday...going to send it to my DH in Afghanistan.  I thought the vibrant colors would help cheer him up and are very reminiscent of the landscape here in Hawaii.  Three flowers represent our immediate family and that we are covered by grace even in the most difficult of circumstances.
Now....this is a perfect example of something that I do NOT love the end result.  I overworked the background and did not finish with the clean result I had in mind so I added a lot of white to help offset that.  It is what it is and I will just embrace it as a part of the learning curve!!  Besides,  he will love it 'cause he is just encouraging like that.  I fully intend to revisit this concept and try to improve upon it, but for today I will walk in the grace that I am painting about and accept my skill level while still striving for more!!
PS--I still want to do a give a way and will be posting about that very soon!

Transformed....

This is my art journal page that I made today from the same thought process that I posted earlier. Lots of meaning for me...and hopefully bright and cheerful for you to look at :-D

His workmanship

This was an art journal page I made last week after just total frustration with  several projects that ended up in the trash.  My tendency to throw away what I don't like has not served me so well in my own faith journey.  I want to walk a careful line here between the necessary command to die to self, and to live unto God still as distinct person from anyone else. God's grace is SO amazing that He loved me while I was yet a sinner.  I am so grateful for that redeeming work through His son and do not depend on any of my own righteousness before a Holy God because that would be foolish.  That does not mean however, that I abandon all of the unique characteristics that I was specifically given by God.  He delights in diversity and is always at work taking those unique traits, gifts and abilities to use for His glory.  Delighting in God does involve understanding the sanctity AND uniqueness of each life...including mine.  I am fearfully and wonderfully made! The church body requires many different members to make up its whole.  Being humble means to have a sober assessment of what I am and what I am not...and to daily submit myself through repentance and faith also to be discipled by His word that is effective to transform me to bear more of Christ's image in that process.  This focus also helps in bearing with the other members in love who are just as imperfect and just as forgiven as I am!

1 John 4:10,Ephesians 2:8-9, Romans 12:1-3, Psalms 139:14, Ephesians 4:2, Colossians 3:13, Ephesians 2:10

altered art journal

This is a thrift store book that I painted with black gesso and embellished to use as my art journal for the new class I am taking.  This is very sparkly in real life....but my camera battery was dead earlier today when I had natural light, so it doesn't show here. I have torn out some pages, glued the rest together in clumps of 3 the primed them with white gesso so that they will be ready to go when I get creative!   There is journaling homework with this class that I need to do first....so I guess the messy play will have to wait until I discipline myself to do the writing.   I tend to be introspective most of the time, but I am hoping that if I take the time to put some thoughts on paper it will help me make sense of them or help me to see how crazy they really are!  Either way I am looking forward to making some fun art this summer.

His rest....

This canvas is obviously a result of the influence of my recent class with a huge emphasis on spring...and Junelle's love of lambs.  I got a lot of texture in this piece using paper for my flowers and layering them, by using the frayed pieces of burlap from my former project for the nest and adding gems for dew on the flowers and for my little birdie's "treasures" in her nest.  You will have to take the class to find out about the sheep {not my technique to share ;0)} Also, because I unexpectedly now have 50 followers (ok my husband doesn't count), but anyhoo....I would like to celebrate by doing a give away.   I will put something together and post later this week....may consider including this piece if that seems like something anyone would be interested in.  On a more serious note...I have been thinking quite a bit lately about how the Lord so faithfully provides for His children.  There is great peace, comfort and rest in really KNOWING that regardless of what the circumstances of life may bring in any given moment or season for that matter.  Thanks for stopping in and I hope that you are finding REST in God through Christ today.

Blog Hop!

OK...this is my first EVER blog hop so I hope that I get it right!!  You should have arrived here from
Kay Boespflug http://www.nordljusfollowyourstar.blogspot.com/

This is my take on one of the projects from this class.  Junelle Jacobsen offered up SO many creative ideas and projects in this 3 week course.  I will most likely be revisiting several of them because the variations and possibilities are huge with most of the project ideas.  At any rate, this is a note board that I made from a canvas to house some tags with scriptures and some blank ones to be filled in with future inspiration.  I left my backdrop pretty neutral so that I can change it up when I feel like it!    The colors and textures on this piece are a good reflection of me right now in this space and place in time incorporating my love of stamps, dies, paints and pretty much all things crafty! Hope you enjoyed seeing it--I certainly had fun making it and will probably tinker with it a good bit more soon ;o).  To continue on the blog hop...

Your next stop will be MotherDanaSt John http://www.stjohnstudios.wordpress.com/
